Immigrant Students’ Language Practices and Perceptions in Basque- Medium Instruction in the Basque Country and the Influence of Parental and Teacher Language Beliefs

This study examined immigrant students’ language practices and perceptions in Basque-medium instruction in the Basque Country, Spain, and explored the influence of parents’ and teacher’s beliefs and expectations therein. Using nexus analysis, it investigated students’ language experiences across home and school. Findings show important differences for students from Latin American (Spanish-speaking) backgrounds and students from Moroccan, Senegalese and Romanian backgrounds. The study contributes to Basque language revitalization discourse by advocating for stronger home-school collaboration, raising awareness of all immigrant learners’ capabilities, and promoting policies that leverage diverse linguistic repertoires for student well-being.
