The Protected Area Layer for geothermal resources is a combination of several geospatial datasets that identify areas of California that are legally or administratively protected from geothermal energy development. These areas are used to determine whether the generating capacity from geothermal fields can be included in statewide resource potential estimates as part of the CEC 2023 Land-Use Screens update.
