English. Open dataset covering 2,167 Brazilian municipalities in all 27 federative units. For each municipality it gives the court district (comarca) with jurisdiction, its entrance level (entrância), the courthouse, the public telephone of the court, whether the municipal record states that a prison unit is located in the municipality, the units located there, the reference units in other municipalities that the record points to, the IBGE municipality code and the 2022 Census population. In this version, 280 municipalities have at least one prison unit located in the municipality (348 listings), 1,036 records state that there is none and 851 records do not say; 195 records point to reference units elsewhere (588 listings). Each row links to a municipal record page where every institutional field cites its primary official source (state Court of Justice, Corregedoria, state prison administration such as SEAP, SEJUS, SAP, AGEPEN or IAPEN, and IBGE) with the date it was verified. Method. The court district recorded is the one installed and operating according to the Corregedoria or the state court’s jurisdiction table; a district created by law but not installed is replaced by the district that serves the municipality. An empty cell means no accessible official source was found; nothing is estimated or copied from third-party aggregators. A unit counts as located in the municipality when the record lists it among the municipality’s units and nothing in the record places it elsewhere; units presented as regional or as the usual destination of detainees are listed as reference units. Units the record describes as deactivated are left out. Population comes from the IBGE aggregates API (2022 Census, aggregate 4709, variable 93), joined by IBGE code. Changes from version 2026-10-27. The previous version had a single column, unidades_prisionais, that mixed units located in the municipality with reference units elsewhere and, in some rows, carried the word “nenhuma” (“none”) and notes taken from the record. Its count of 767 listings in 469 municipalities overstated the number of municipalities with a prison unit. This version replaces that column and its flag with ha_unidade_no_municipio, unidades_no_municipio and unidades_de_referencia, keeping only unit names and leaving out units the record describes as deactivated. It also reads the courthouse, its telephone and the entrance level when the record gives them as a structured entry, and empties one malformed comarca cell (Vila Velha, ES). The other columns are unchanged. Limitations. Coverage is partial and grows over time. When a record describes its units only in running text, unit names are taken from that text by unit type (Penitenciária, Presídio, Cadeia Pública, CDP and so on); a unit the text names without such a word is not captured. Telephone numbers and unit names change, so check the municipal record and the official source before relying on a value. The dataset contains no information about individual people. Português.
