Indigenous Knowledge of bearded seal (Erignathus barbatus), ringed seal (Pusa hispida), and spotted seal (Phoca largha) behaviour and habitat use near Utqiaġvik, Alaska, USA, from 2018 to 2019

This data is the summarized Indigenous Knowledge (IK) from interviews with nine Iñupiaq hunters from Utqiaġvik, Alaska, USA. We documented Indigenous Knowledge of bearded, ringed, and spotted seals behaviour and habitat use using semi-directed interviews in November 2018 and September 2019. The IK was summarized in data tables to show the percentage of hunters that shared IK specific to different behaviours and habitat. Additionally areas of species presence were also identified on maps, showing the number of hunters that identified that area as used by the species. The summarized IK was reviewed by the majority of the hunters interviewed and reflects the knowledge shared. The dataset consists of 5 files separate csv files each containing IK for bearded, spotted, and ringed seal specific to behaviours and/or habitat: 1. Ice. 2. Behaviour, 3. Currents & winds, 4. Diving, and 5. Waterbodies or shorelines characteristics. The shape file contains information for all three species on areas they are frequently observed/concentrate.
