Trichodesmium is a globally important marine nitrogen fixing cyanobacterium that forms colonies and ubiquitously co-occurs with a diverse consortium of epibiotic microorganisms. The role of the co-occurring microbes, or epibionts, in influence Trichodesmium success in the environment has yet to be determined. This study sought to explore the metabolic potential in the Trichodesmium microbiome by sequencing metagenomes from Trichodesmium colonies collected along a transect in the western North Atlantic ocean.
