Red Noise Detection in Pulsar Arrival Times using a Memory-Modulated Stochastic Process

Data files for Gallo, Reyes, & Bernido, submitted, 2025, Red Noise Detection in Pulsar Arrival Times using a Memory-modulated Stochastic Process. Using the NANOGrav 11-year dataset, we analyzed the timing residuals of millisecond pulsars (MSPs) to identify the presence of time-correlated ``red" noise through the mean-square displacement (MSD) curve, parameterized by the memory parameter $\mu$. With a threshold value of $\mu_{\text{thr}} = 0.63$, we classified 30 pulsars with observation spans of more than 4 years as follows: 9 pulsars with red noise and 20 without, consistent with the Bayesian modeling by Arzoumanian et al. (2018), with the exception of 1 pulsar, which was tagged as difficult to model. The strong correlation between $\mu$ and the Bayes factor also demonstrates the method's potential as a complementary tool for red noise detection in pulsar arrival times and may offer new insight into the nature of neutron stars.Data available here: -ts.zip - binned time-series of timing residuals for the 30 pulsars -msd.zip - mean-square displacement vs. time lag for the 30 pulsars
