The study was performed using a self-administered questionnaire consisting of different sections: 1) demographic characteristics including age, gender, place of residence, academic year and field of study, and perceived socioeconomic status; 2) drug use assessment questionnaire to assess the pattern of smoking, alcohol, and illicit drug use. In this study, we assessed the use of cannabis, opium (and condensed forms of opium), heroin, stimulants (methamphetamine, LSD, and ecstasy), and methylphenidate. We assessed lifetime indicators, the past 12 months, frequency of use in the past month, and the age of first use of each substance. Cocaine use and non-medicinal use of morphine, methadone, and buprenorphine in the past 12 months were also assessed; 3) psychological assessment consisting of the 6-item Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K6)(21), a single question for overall happiness(22), and questions on having a major problem in life, perceived academic achievement, and social support; 4) questions about the family status and family relations, parents’ marital status, and relationship with family; 5) risk factors for drug use consisting of opportunity of drug use, risk perception, drug use in family and friends, and receiving education on drugs; 6) lifestyle consisting of physical activity, gaming, gambling, and interest in social and political topics. Additionally, to provide an indirect estimate, we asked everyone about last month use of cannabis among three of their closest friends who were present and participated in the survey. To assess the genuineness of responses, we asked each participant to guess how accurate his/her closest friend in the class has answered questions regarding drug use.
