Here we aimed to explore some vital phenotypes and potential genes involved in probiotic functions and adaptive responses of Weissella paramesenteroides MbWp-142(MW-142), isolated from Chinese traditional naturally fermented mulberry wine. We found that MW-142 showed good tolerance to simulated human gastrointestinal tract, self-coagulation, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. Comparative genomic analysis of six W. paramesenteroides strains showed that MW-142 contained 213 unique genes. MbWp-142 genome possessed 142 genes related to carbohydrate transport and metabolism, including 73 sugar transporters and 36 phosphotransferase system enzymes. MbWp-142 contained high number (87) of carbohydrate-active enzymes especially glycoside hydrolases and glycosyl transferases. Extensive stress-related proteins may help the survival of MbWp-142 under gastrointestinal environment including temperature, pH, bile, osmotic and oxidative stresses. Many surface or extracellular proteins identified in MbWp-142 can attribute to adhesion to various extracellular matrices or external environment.
