Royal Australasian College of Physicians (Queensland): Workforce Survey and Qualitative Interviews Study

In 2013 there were 2628 Royal Australasian College of Physicians (Queensland) members and more than 17,000 members Australia wide. Therefore, understanding the impact of regional placements on career outcomes is of interest to a wide range of individuals, organisations and policy makers.

The aim of this research was to inform this community about the barriers to regional training and practice and to gain understanding and insight to College member views of this issue.

Quantitative (online survey) and qualitative (in-depth interviews) research methods were used. Once refined and piloted, a survey tool was administered to all Queensland College members and completed by 1142 (43.5%). In addition, twenty in-depth interviews were conducted.

Qualitative data collected include questions on demographics, work life balance, medical education and fellowship, and where participants have lived. Quantitative information collected from participants includes responses on regional training or practice experience, barriers in up-skilling and skill retention in regional areas.
