The aim of the project was to quantify cell attachment and carrying capacity of LDPE plastic granules following passage through a municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), and to assess the microbial community that accumulates on the surface of plastic in untreated wastewater influent, filtered wastewater influent and wastewater effluent. Overall, we wanted to assess dangers posed by common plastic type LDPE in WWTP before their potential release into the environment, whether microbes become concentrated on the surface of plastic and whether there is the potential for plastic associated biofilms to harbour pathogenic microbes.
