SMC (Sheet Moulding Compound) material characterisation datasets

These datasets focus on the material characterisation tests that have been performed in the PIONEER project for one of the use cases which is related to the SMC (Sheet Moulding Compound) process. The corresponding end-user employs a SMC50%CF prepreg which is composed of a vinyl ester resin and carbon fibre. The characterisation tests performed by Tekniker are enthalpy and cure kinetics on SMC50%CF prepreg and specific heat capacity and density on SMC50%CF fully cured coupons. Along with the datasets, a PDF document has been attached where the characterisation tests and data processing are explained to understand how these material properties have been obtained. The document also enumerates and describes the raw data files used to obtain such properties (included herewith) to make them understandable.

The PIONEER project aims to facilitate the development of an open innovation platform and interoperable digital pipeline for addressing a design-by-simulation optimisation framework enabling a seamless dataflow along the material value chain – i.e., design, simulation, production planning, manufacturing, quality assurance. PIONEER connects materials modelling and materials characterisation, simulation-based digital twins, and data-driven models, updated through distributed production data from embedded IoT edge devices and product quality, providing advanced strategies based on data aggregation and Artificial Intelligence (AI) for an online adaptation of the model to evolving environments. For that, PIONEER implements inline feedforward control strategies for enhancing the efficiency of the industrial systems in high-mix/low-volume production schemes.
