In this study, we used high-throughput transcriptome sequencing in two pigs from extreme breeds. Our aim was to discover and characterize novel expressed transcripts and to identify differentially expressed genes that may explain some of the phenotypic variation. We sequenced the male gonad transcriptome of a Large White and an Iberian pig, two highly divergent phenotypic breeds in terms of production traits, e.g., growth, fatness and reproductive performance.
