The2024WHOBacterialPriorityPathogensList(WHOBPPL)isanimportanttoolintheglobalfightagainstantimicrobialresistance.Buildingonthe2017edition,the2024WHOBPPLupdatesandrefinestheprioritizationofantibiotic-resistantbacterialpathogenstoaddresstheevolvingchallengesofantibioticresistance.Thelistcategorizesthesepathogensintocritical,high,andmediumprioritygroupstoinformresearchanddevelopment(R&D)andpublichealthinterventions.The2024WHOBPPLcovers24pathogens,spanning15familiesofantibiotic-resistantbacterialpathogens.NotableamongtheseareGram-negativebacteriaresistanttolast-resortantibiotics,drug-resistantmycobacteriumtuberculosis,andotherhigh-burdenresistantpathogenssuchasSalmonella,Shigella,Neisseriagonorrhoeae,Pseudomonasaeruginosa,andStaphylococcusaureus.Theinclusionofthesepathogensinthelistunderscorestheirglobalimpactintermsofburden,aswellasissuesrelatedtotransmissibility,treatability,andpreventionoptions.ItalsoreflectstheR&Dpipelineofnewtreatmentsandemergingresistancetrends.TheWHOBPPLactsasaguideforprioritizingR&DandinvestmentsinAMR,emphasizingtheneedforregionallytailoredstrategiestoeffectivelycombatresistance.Ittargetsdevelopersofantibacterialmedicines,academicandpublicresearchinstitutions,researchfunders,andpublic–privatepartnershipsinvestinginAMRR&D,aswellaspolicy-makersresponsiblefordevelopingandimplementingAMRpoliciesandprograms.Furtherdetailsontherationalebehindthelist,themethodologiesusedtodevelopthelistandthekeyfindings,canbefoundintheaccompanyingreport.
