ADJACENT Study Data: Multiple Senses of Community in Adjacent Neighborhoods (Seville, Spain)

Abstract The ADJACENT Study Dataset contains survey and personal network data collected to examine the relationship between personal networks and sense of community in urban neighborhoods. The data were gathered through a survey of 655 residents living in nine adjacent neighborhoods in Seville (Spain). The dataset combines individual-level demographic and psychosocial variables with ego-centered personal network data, enabling multilevel analysis of social relationships and neighborhood perceptions. Personal networks were collected using a fixed-list name generator limited to 30 alters, asking respondents to identify individuals with whom they maintain frequent weekly contact. For each alter, respondents reported attributes including tie strength, relationship type, residential location, and neighborhood of interaction. In addition, respondents identified alters associated with different functional support relations, including emotional support, financial assistance, advice, positive feedback, instrumental help, and social companionship. The dataset includes survey data for 655 respondents and personal network data for 624 ego networks, provided as alter attribute tables and adjacency matrices. Network data are available in Excel and UCINET formats, facilitating direct use in social network analysis software. This dataset supports research in social network analysis, urban sociology, and community psychology, particularly studies focusing on neighborhood relations, social support, and sense of community. The ADJACENT study These data correspond to the project “Multiple Senses of Community in Adjacent Neighborhoods: A Personal Network Analysis Approach” (PID2021-126230OB-I00), funded by the Spanish State Research Agency (AEI) under the 2021–2023 State Plan Call – Oriented Research Projects. This dataset contains survey and personal network data collected from 655 residents in nine neighborhoods in Seville (Spain) as part of the ADJACENT research project. The data include psychosocial measures, demographic variables, and ego-centered personal networks of up to 30 alters per respondent. Network data are provided as adjacency matrices and attribute tables in Excel and UCINET formats. The dataset is intended for research on sense of community, neighborhood relations, and personal network structures. The database consists of: (a) an SPSS file containing the responses of 655 respondents to a questionnaire with psychosocial and demographic variables, and (b) 624 matrices with personal network data, provided in Excel and UCINET formats.Personal networks were collected using a name generator limited to 30 alters. Respondents identified individuals with whom they have regular weekly interaction. For each alter, several attributes were collected, including tie strength, type of relationship, residential neighborhood, and contexts of interaction. Respondents also indicated functional ties related to six types of social support (confident support, financial help, advice, positive feedback, instrumental help, and companionship).
