In this study, we proposed that five essential genes are not truly performing essential functions. Their lethal effect after deletion is actually a side effect and can be rescued by mutating another gene. We tested this idea in the yeast Sacchromyces cerevisiae. Large-scale whole genome sequencing of some essentiality-reversing mutants to reveal the loss-of-function mutations on the rescuing genes.
