Lactococcus lactis subsp. cremoris NZ9000. The mesophilic homofermentative bacterium Lactococcus lactis is an important industrial microorganism of great relevance for the nutrition of hundreds of millions of people worldwide, due to the GRAS (generally regarded as safe) status. L. lactis NZ9000 has been distributed worldwide to laboratories and strain collections, and used as an excellent tool for straightforward cloning and expression of intracellular, secreted, as well as integral membrane proteins of both prokaryotes and eukaryotes. At present, strain NZ9000 has become the universal "laboratory workhorse" for genetic and functional analyses in gram positive bacteria.
