This article describes the development and design of a sustainable solar electric cargo tricycle in Hungary, Europe, and the experience of implementation and results of 5-year-long running on only onboard solar energy. The authors examined present ways of low-consumption transportation methods, electric vehicles and their suitability for solar usage in sustainable transportation. Statements were made about design, sizing and optimising solar vehicles for onboard solar energy utilisation. An overall distance of 24748.4 km was covered with 1686 kWh total energy consumption, according to the onboard measured data showing 100% solar-powered operation from 2017 to 2022. Sun provides enough energy for daily passenger and cargo transport with fully onboard generated solar energy even in Central Europe, in case a lighter, slower, solar-powered electric tricycle is chosen and developed instead of cars with high energy consumption. Apart from reaching very far destinations in a short time – which is beyond renewable energy capability –it functions similarly to automobiles.
