In this study, the wildflower Mimulus verbenaceus (Phrymaceae) was used as a model to explore the developmental genetics that underlie a recently emerged phenotypic novelty, a mediolateral foliar anthocyanin stripe. The hypothesis being tested was that a hidden developmental prepattern potentiated the ultimate emergence of the novel stripe pattern, and the transgenic lines included in this BioProject were generated to test whether various genes are involved in the pattern.
