These observations are registered to the Gaia Data Release 2 frame to determine an accurate absolute position of SN 1987A. These observations are chosen because they are the earliest observations of SN 1987A (before the ejecta has expanded significantly) with sufficiently high resolution and image quality. The absolute position of SN 1987A is important for connecting observations in different wavebands, inferring projected sky velocities of (different regions of) the ejecta, and searching for the compact object (and, in the future, inferring its kick velocity).
