Engineering Graduates, 1989

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Engineering Academy of Denmark wished to have the profile of future graduates determined in order to be able to create a graduate profile which may ensure the future reputation of the Department of Mechanical Engineering as a good institute of education. # A number of factors on which the Department of Mechanical Engineering has no influence (fewer students, higher exam quotient as a prerequisite for right of admission, smaller grants per student and new requirements and expectations on the part of those who employ the graduates, etc.) have made it necessary to put the various tasks in order of priority and to make decisions in principle in connection with syllabuses, technical/pedagogical development and use of resources. # In order to obtain the best possible basis for decision-making the Department of Mechanical Engineering decided, among other things, to carry out a questionnaire survey among the young graduates. The purposes of this survey are: # #- to identify strong as well as weak points of the present # education; #- to obtain a basis for an assessment of future technical # and other needs in various connections; #- to obtain a preliminary indication of possibilities of # and interest in arranging in-service training courses and # refresher courses for the graduates. This interest is a # new method of professional innovation; #- to map out whether the graduates are interested in a # graduate association and, if so, which form this association # should have; #- to update the survey of engineering graduates from 1981 # (DDA-0651). # #The answers were also used by the department representatives in connection with a strategy project at the Engineering Academy of Denmark, a project which had been initiated by the supreme governing body of the Academy. However, the assessment of future needs was primarily meant to form the basis of the strategy considerations of the Department and of the work of the staff-student committee concerning the preparation of a new syllabus
