Dimethylsulfide dynamics in first-year sea ice melt ponds in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago

The study of the dynamics of dimethylsulfide (DMS), a climate-relevant compound, in melt ponds is in its infancy as only two previous studies reported DMS concentrations in melt ponds, one in the Antarctic and the other one in the Arctic (Sharma et al., 1999, Asher et al., 2011). This study sought to investigate the DMS concentrations in first-year sea ice melt ponds located in the Eastern Canadian Arctic Archipelago (CAA) to determine whether melt ponds are significant direct sources of DMS. Additionally, the prerequisites and processes responsible for the presence of this climate-active gas in melt ponds were also investigated.
