Metagenomic sequencing of bat infesting ectoparasites

Bat flies are obligate hematophagous ectoparasites of bats. There is a strong coevolution between these parasites and their specified host. Based on their frequent feeding habits and host switching activities, they could serve as biological or mechanical vectors of various pathogens. The vector role in the case of bacterial infections (e.g., Bartonella sp.) are well studied while, on the side of viruses there is a knowledge gap. We conducted viral metagenomic sequencing of bat blood (exclusive food source) and coupled bat flies to assess the potential viral vector role of these parasites.
