资源简介:
Over the course of paragraph 3 background research and fieldwork in 1993, one prehistoric, and three historic sites were discovered. The principal goal of Paragraph 4 site examination for this project is to gather sufficient information on the 3 historic archaeological sites to allow the federal agencies to make determinations of eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places. For each site, such information minimally includes horizontal and vertical boundaries in relation to the project area; intra-site artifact variability; temporal and cultural affiliations; physical and cultural integrity; and an estimation of research potential. The methodology used includes prehistoric and historic background research, systematic sampling sing shovel test pits, excavation units to determine vertical limits of each site, and stratigraphy, and mapping of all structural and depositional features encountered. The Whittemore site is argued to have excellent research potential, as the site bears intact features, discrete middens (indicating high integrity), and artifacts dating to as early as the late 18th century, shortly after the area was first settled by Euro-Americans. The integrity of the Heath site is moderate to low, given the lack of clarity of artifact deposition. This limits the research potential of the site. The White site is argued to have high research potential, as the artifacts recovered from the site are dated to the mid 19th - early 20th century, during which time the parcel was occupied by Irish Immigrant families, about which little is known in this area.
