Facilitating leadership and governance for emergency care system development in the Pacific region

This thesis explores the World Health Organisation’s health system building block of ‘leadership and governance’ and how it applies to developing and sustaining emergency care systems in the Pacific region. Using predominantly qualitative research methods informed by critical social theory, thesis findings highlight the unique strengths of Pacific emergency clinician leaders who are advocating for and building resilient emergency care systems in their countries. The agency and potential positive influence of Pacific emergency clinicians should be supported through leadership training, professional development, mentorship, social networks, and collaborative partnerships for leadership support and Pacific emergency care systems strengthening.
