High-Pressure Synthesis of Ultrahigh Elastic Moduli Materials in the Os-C-N System

In this proposal, we aim to synthesize novel and ultrahigh elastic moduli materials within the scarcely explored Os-C-N system, using laser-heated diamond anvil cells to subject starting materials containing these three elements to pressures ranging from ambient to 130 GPa and temperatures reaching several thousand Kelvin. The crystal structure, bulk modulus, and recoverability of the synthesized compounds will be determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) from polycrystalline. The results, providing rare and invaluable insight into ternary metal carbonitride chemistry up to megabar pressures, will also be used to calculate other mechanical properties through first-principles calculations.
