Chinese Mother-in-Law and Daughter-in-Law Conflict Dataset (CMDC)

The Chinese Mother-in-Law and Daughter-in-Law Conflict Dataset (CMDC) is a qualitative dataset constructed from multi-source media texts and in-depth interviews, designed to systematically document and analyze typical conflict scenarios and discursive practices in contemporary Chinese families. The dataset covers four major conflict themes: (1) Parenting Disagreements, (2) Household Chore Distribution, (3) Consumption Value Clashes, and (4) Privacy Boundary Conflicts. Data sources include: (a) 8 conflict excerpts from two Chinese family TV dramas (Double-Sided Adhesive Tape and The Story of Rose); (b) 8 high-engagement Douyin short videos on mother-in-law and daughter-in-law conflicts, along with top user comments; and (c) 16 real-life conflict events from two in-depth interviews (DIL-01 and DIL-02). Each case is annotated with conflict type, participant roles, discourse interactions, and emotional responses. This dataset is suitable for research in family sociology, gender studies, media discourse analysis, intergenerational communication, and mixed-methods social science research.
