A dark twin of the Crab

We propose an EPIC observation of the recently discovered young PSR J2022+3842.Compared to other young pulsars in our Galaxy, J2022+3842 is exceptionallypowerful and has the shortest spin period. An archival Chandra image hasrevealed a point source and a faint compact nebula with puzzling Xrayproperties. The Xray efficiencies of the pulsar and its PWN are orders ofmagnitude lower than one would expect for such a powerful pulsar. On the otherhand, the object is still bright enough to allow a detailed study in Xrays. Wewill carry out a joint phaseresolved, multiwavelength analysis to betterunderstand the radiativelyinefficient energy loss mechanism of this outstandingpulsar.
