VPRS 12248 List of Miners Phthisis Assistance Applicants

Miners Phthisis, also known as silicosis, was a disease suffered as a result of working in underground gold mines. Symptoms were similar to those of tuberculosis. By 1929, a number of gold miners in Victoria were incapacitated by the disease and were unable to work. Until 1936, financial assistance was provided to Miners Phthisis sufferers under the Invalid and Old Age Pensions Act 1912 (Commonwealth) and the Workers Compensation Act 1928. Given the large proportion of applicants with Miners Phthisis, and the specific requirements for granting assistance to sufferers of the disease, the Miners Phthisis Act 1936 was established.
