Agriculture-related activities and processes, such enteric fermentation, were responsible for roughly 46 percent of global human-made methane emissions in 2023. Agriculture, together with fuel exploitation and the waste sector, accounted for around 97 percent of global methane emissions in 2023. Methane is an organic gas formed by carbon and four hydrogen atoms. It is one of the most potent greenhouse gases in the short term due to its high warming potential. It can be produced either by natural or anthropogenic (from human activities) processes.
