What impact do sociocultural influences have on the student learning environment?

Schools in low socioeconomic environments face unique sociocultural influences that impact upon the student learning environment. The purpose of this case study was to identify, describe and develop an understanding of how the sociocultural influences impact upon the student learning environment in a school from a low socioeconomic area. The sociocultural influences were examined by looking at the child through a cultural historical perspective making use of a three lens approach which included the personal, interpersonal and the community /institutional perspective. The empirical literature was reviewed in order to ascertain what researchers have identified as contributing factors that combine together to form the school culture, both socially and cognitively. The literature reviewed is focused on understanding relationships, which includes aspects such as emotional intelligence, parenting styles, school culture and social capital. Vygotsky’s (1987) theory of learning is explored and used as a basis for further investigation into the culture of the school and the teaching and learning program. The study has resulted in a model for education entitled “The Successful Schools Model”. This is based on the findings from the research project. The implications of the study indicate that positive relationships are vital before effective teaching and learning can take place. The teachers in the school need to have an understanding of the child’s world outside the school environment if they are to meet the needs of the child within the school environment. This study has found that student engagement is enhanced when there are supportive relationships based on trust, respect and understanding. These form the basis for creating a positive school culture which is the foundation behind successful student learning
