Density and diameter of native species Acer and non-native species Rhamnus

Data was collected on October 15 and October 22, 2014 on York University campus in the Danby woodlot. Quadrats (20 square feet) were created by laying two 20 foot transect tapes perpendicular to each other. All individual trees of Acer (maple) or Rhamnus (buckthorn) species with trunks fully contained within the transect tapes were identified using a tree guide and their diameter at breast height (DBH) was measured using a transect tape and recorded in feet. The total number of trees of all species was then counted for the entire quadrat. To be included in the quadrat a tree’s trunk had to have been fully contained within the transect tapes. This procedure was repeated for 10 quadrats, the first of which was placed at the south west corner of the woodlot, and each successive quadrat placed five feet from the north east corner of the previous. This ensured representation of the entire woodlot by sampling one edge, going through the middle, and ending at the far edge.
