The main content of this monograph is the investigation and systematic paleontological reexamination of the genera in China and the species they contain, including the classification, synonymy, etymology, type species, diagnostic characteristics, comparisons or discussions, species attribution, stratigraphic range and geographical distribution of these genera. Each geological period is also supplemented with illustrations, photographs and references of the type species. The diversity changes of these genera (before taxonomic revision) show that the differences among the nine periods of the Phanerozoic are highly distinct. The Permian has the largest number of genera (208), followed by the Devonian (180) and Ordovician (113), with the Jurassic (12) and Cretaceous (13) at the end. The three periods of the Mesozoic, especially the Triassic (88 genera), are particularly noteworthy. This monograph also includes a preliminary collation of other brachiopods associated with the Chinese genera, which constitutes another important component of this work. For each geological period, the authors discuss fossil assemblages, communities or faunas (faunules) from different regions and periods, as well as the similarities and differences of brachiopods from different contemporaneous plates (or terranes). They identify and/or confirm more than 220 brachiopod assemblages, communities or faunas, elucidate their biostratigraphic significance, and determine their positions in the contemporaneous global biogeographic realms.
