Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder of the central nervous system, characterized by onset of dementia in the elderly population (aged above 65 years). It can be hypothesized that butyrate/butyrate-producing bacteria might have positive effects of memory improvement in mouse models of dementia-related diseases. Thus, in our study, we wanted to determine if butyrate-producing bacteria are at all present or completely absent in the gut microbiota of AD patients. The application of single or mixtures of butyrate producers in studies associatedwith dementia-related disease emphasizes the importance identifying butyrate-producing bacteria and to measure their rate of butyrate production. The 16S ribosomal RNA (16S rRNA) gene of each isolate was sequenced and draft genome of some strains will be submitted.
