资源简介:

Employee performance is fundamental to ensuring that public service functions efficiently, equitably, and responsively. However, despite these intentions, the influence of demographic characteristics on employee performance remains underexamined, especially among public servants. The main purpose of the study was to investigate the influence of demographic characteristics on employee performance in the public service at Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC)-Kabarnet Campus. The specific objectives of the study were to examine the relationship between age and performance levels among employees in public service, to assess how the level of education affects employee performance and to establish how years of work experience impacts on employee performance. This study is grounded in two key theories, the Human Capital Theory and Social Identity Theory. The target population of the study comprises all 44 public service employees at KMTC–Kabarnet Campus. Given the relatively small target population of 44 employees, the study will adopt a census approach, involving all 44 employees as respondents. The researchers will employ both questionnaires and interview schedules as the main data collection instruments. The data collected from both questionnaires and interview schedules was analyzed using a combination of quantitative and qualitative techniques. Quantitative data obtained from closed-ended questionnaire items was analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 25. Descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations was used to summarize demographic information and key variables. Qualitative data gathered from open-ended questions and interview schedules was analyzed thematically. The study findings reveal that age significantly influences performance, with 95% of respondents agreeing that older employees perform better due to their experience, while 85.5% acknowledged that younger employees adapt faster to new technologies. Educational level was found to impact job performance, with 85.5% agreeing that continuous learning improves service delivery, and 83% stating that educational qualifications influence promotional opportunities. Work experience emerged as a key factor, with 90% of respondents confirming that experience improves innovation and problem-solving, and 88.5% agreeing it enhances decision-making capabilities. Additionally, 82.5% believed it influences leadership potential. The study concludes that demographic characteristics play a significant role in shaping employee performance. Therefore, institutions should embrace strategic human resource practices that recognize and optimize the unique strengths of a demographically diverse workforce. The study recommends that KMTC should implement age-inclusive mentorship programs, promote continuous professional development, and integrate both education and experience into performance appraisal and promotion systems. These measures would ensure improved productivity, motivation, and institutional effectiveness in public service delivery
