The ascomycete Drechmeria coniospora is the sole formally recognized species in the Drechmeria genus, and is one of the most common and best documented endoparasitoid nematophagous fungus. It infects a variety of nematode species, including plant pathogens such as Aphelenchoides fragariae, Ditylenchus destructor, the root-knot parasitic nematode Meloidogyne spp., and the free-living soil nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. D. coniospora infection induces the expression of a large number of genes encoding antimicrobial peptides in C. elegans, and the infection complex has served as a model to examine innate immunity.
