Area, water level and volume time series of ice-marginal lakes at Isortuarsuup Sermia, southwest Greenland, 1987 to 2024

This dataset accompanies the article "Cyclical high-magnitude lake drainage slows Greenland ice sheet motion" (Wang et al., Nature Communications). It provides multi-decadal records of three ice-marginal lakes adjacent to Isortuarsuup Sermia, southwest Greenland: North Lake, South Lake and Isortuarsuup Tasia. For each lake, the dataset includes: 1. Lake outlines (GeoPackage): lake boundaries digitised from Landsat 5, 7 and 8, SPOT-2 and Sentinel-2 imagery, with acquisition date, sensor, lake area and area uncertainty. Coordinates are in WGS 84 / NSIDC Sea Ice Polar Stereographic North (EPSG:3413).2. Water level and volume time series (CSV): lake water level and relative lake volume with uncertainties, derived by combining lake boundaries with ArcticDEM basin topography, from ArcticDEM Strips directly, and from ICESat-2 ATL06 altimetry. The method used for each estimate is given in the Source column of each CSV file. The records span 1987 to 2024 and capture repeated glacial lake outburst floods from North Lake and South Lake. Water levels are given in metres relative to the WGS 84 ellipsoid. Relative volumes are given in km³ relative to the lowest observed water level.
