Flood impact and risk reduction assessment in Iniesta and Motilla del Palancar (Spain) (2023-09-19)

A heavy rainfall event on September 19, 2023 led to significant flooding in the municipalities of Iniesta and Motilla del Palancar, Spain. The activation was requested by the General Directorate of Civil Protection and Emergencies (CENEM) on behalf of the Confederación Hidrográfica del Júcar to assess the flood extent resulting from the September 2023 rainfall event, as well as for the additional rainfall events in 2024. The activation supports ongoing risk reduction efforts. In Motilla del Palancar, the analysis focuses on understanding of the flood extent, whereas in Iniesta, the analysis additionally examines the effectiveness of existing flood mitigation measures through scenario-based modelling that compares outcomes with and without these interventions. The results aim to support national and local authorities for future flood risk planning, particularly in strengthening flood preparedness.
