# **Economist Enterprise (EIU) Democracy Index**

The Democracy Index dataset provides a detailed analysis of political trends at country, regional and global levels. Drawing on comprehensive data, it examines how growing dissatisfaction with democratic models is driving demand for new forms of political representation and influencing governance, policymaking and the broader operating environment. The index provides a snapshot of the current state of democracy worldwide for 167 independent states and two territories (almost the entire population of the world).

EIU’s Democracy Index dataset is based on five categories:

1. Electoral process and pluralism
2. Functioning of government
3. Political participation
4. Political culture
5. Civil liberties

The overall index of democracy is on a scale of 0-10, and the overall index is the simple average of the five category indexes. Based on their overall score, countries are classified as one of four types of regime:

1. Full democracies—scores greater than 8
2. Flawed democracies—scores greater than 6, and less than or equal to 8
3. Hybrid regimes—scores greater than 4, and less than or equal to 6; and
4. Authoritarian regimes—scores less than or equal to 4
