AI-Enabled Smart Glasses for People with Severe Vision Impairments

This thesis explores smart glasses as assistive technology for people with Cerebral Visual Impairment (CVI), a brain-based condition that disrupts how visual information is processed. Although CVI is projected to become the leading cause of vision impairment, most assistive devices focus mainly on ocular vision loss. Working closely with people with CVI, this research investigates how smart glasses could support everyday tasks such as reading, locating objects, and managing sensory overload. The findings demonstrate the opportunities for smart glasses in easing daily challenges and underscore the urgent need to design technologies for this underrepresented group.
