VPRS 1058 Ledgers of State Schools

The Public Works Department (VA 669) had wide-ranging responsibilities for all public works and buildings, including construction, maintenance and fitting out of these buildings. Other major responsibilities included roads and bridges, ports and harbours, local government and water supply. A considerable portion of the work of the Department came from the erection, maintenance, fitting and equipping of schools.This series consists of the Ledgers recording expenditure in each financial year on schools. Ledgers were divided into sections correlating with the Divisions as laid down for Departmental expenditure as set out in the Treasury Finance Statement for the financial year. For State Schools, the largest entries are for the Erection and Maintenance of Schools. Other Divisions listed in this series are to do with Kindergartens, Training College and Manual facilities. As the nature of the education system changed, separate Divisions were set up for Primary Schools, High Schools, Higher Elementary Schools and for the provision of Teachers residences.Details given in this series inhjclude the dates of the service, the name of the claimant, the school name and number and the amount expended and the arrangements for authorisation of expenditure and payments.
