Ground stations measure PM values every single hour at the point they are at. These measurements can be used in determining the air quality of a region. It is important to know that the measurement stations are calibrated to determine the accuracy of the data; this is done according to standards. Some particulate matter, like soot, smoke, dust, or dirt, is large enough to see by the eye. Fine particulate matter is so small that it can only be seen through an electron microscope. PM2,5 describes fine inhalable particles, with diameters that are generally 2.5 micrometers and smaller. Particle pollution is produced by both primary and secondary sources. Primary particulate matter is emitted directly from construction sites, wildfires, wood burning, gravel pits, agricultural activities, and dusty storms. Secondary particulate matter is formed in the air by physical-chemical reactions from other pollutants such as sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), ammonia (NH3), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The size of particles is directly linked to their potential for causing health problems. Fine particles (PM2.5) pose the greatest health risk. Fine particles can cause short-term health effects such as eye, nose, throat, and lung irritation, coughing, sneezing, and shortness of breath.
