During a seismic event, the foundation is subjected to lateral load and moment due to structural inertia. Seismic capacity envelopes prove to be a useful tool for the capacity design of foundations. Three-dimensional (<i>V-H-M</i>) seismic capacity envelopes for foundations on rock-mass have not been studied in the available literature. In this study, seismic capacity envelopes for foundations on rock mass, obeying the generalized Hoek–Brown failure criteria have been developed. Finite element limit analysis has been carried out to study the effect of rock-mass properties on the envelope, where Geological Strength Index, <i>GSI </i>has been found to have the most significant effect on it. Based on a detailed parametric study, a cubic ellipsoidal shape has been proposed to characterize its shape and an empirical expression has been derived. Using the expression, <i>V-H-M</i> envelope can be developed analytically based on the uniaxial<sub><em> </em></sub>capacities of the foundation on rock-mass. Validation of the expression has been performed to demonstrate that it can be used with confidence as an alternative to the computationally expensive numerical analysis, to estimate the seismic capacity envelop of a strip foundation placed on rock-mass.
