The order Rhodobacterales represents one of the most investigated bacterial groups. It encompasses a highly phenotypically, metabolically and ecologically diverse group of species expressing many important metabolic activities. To better understand the origin of such metabolic variability we sequenced genomes of three closely related haloalkaliphilic species differing in their phototrophic capacity and oxygen preference: photoheterotrophic and facultatively anaerobic bacterium Rhodobaca barguzinensis, aerobic photoheterotrophic Roseinatronobacter thiooxidans and aerobic facultatively lithoautotrophic bacterium "Natronohydrobacter thiooxidans".
