Chinese Contentious Events Dataset (CCED)

The China Contentious Events Dataset (CCED) is a structured, event-level dataset of protest events in China spanning the years 2010 to 2024. It draws exclusively on Mandarin-language reporting from Radio Free Asia (RFA), a US government-funded international broadcaster, providing a systematic record of contentious collective action in China as documented by a non-state, non-Chinese-government source. This dataset is a work in progress and will be extended in future versions.

Each row in the dataset represents a single source document (an RFA article) that describes at least one protest event. The dataset contains 11,750 rows and 16 columns after deduplication and quality filtering. Source article texts (originally in Traditional or Simplified Chinese) have been replaced by machine-generated English summaries stored in the `text_content_summary` column, produced via a combined summarisation-and-translation approach. Named entity recognition (NER) was applied to extract structured event metadata including event date, geographic location, participant names, organisations, participant counts, detentions, and violence descriptors.
