B. methylotrophicus is a gram-positive bacterium associated with plant roots. It is a successful biological control agent. Strain B26, previously identified as B. subtilis B26 and isolated from the bioenergy crop switchgrass, produces lipopeptides such as surfactins. These biomolecules, in addition to their antimicrobial activity, also act as immune stimulators of the host plant. The genome of B26 is mainly suited for comparative genomics with other Bacillus strains and the evaluation of new compounds that are valuable for commercial production.
