VPRS 15657 Schedules of Residence Areas, St Arnaud District Survey Office

This series consists of lists of Residence Area rights issued for the St Arnaud Land District. The name and address of the holder is given with the location of the land with a description and the number of the right. Some schedules also contain a sketch plan of the piece of land.One of the privileges under the Mines Act, conferred by the holding of a miner's right until 1935 was that of residence on up to one acre on a gold-fields area. Those occupying a residence area were "deemed in law to be possessed ... of such ... parcels ... and the property therein".From 1935, with the passing of the Land (Residence Areas) Act 1935 the right of occupation of residence areas was broadened to all Crown lands and placed under the Land Act rather than the Mines Act.
