Within the Anoecia genus, pseudogenisation of the biotin and riboflavin biosynthetic genes in the Anoecia's Buchnera last common ancestor rendered Buchnera unable to supply these essential nutrients to the aphid, and thus triggered the establishment of a secondary co-obligate endosymbiont. Through whole-genome sequencing and FISH microscopy, we determined that Anoecia corni apparently harbours a Fukatsuia symbiont as Buchnera's co-obligate endosymbiont. This population was also found to be infected by a other likely facultative symbionts.
