Enterococcus thailandicus a523 was isolated from raw sewer effluent received at the Robert O. Pickard Environmental Centre, a waste water treatment plant in Ottawa, Ontario. Complete genome sequencing of this isolate provided a platform for comparative genome analysis in relation to other members of the genus Enterococcus. The enterococci belong to a larger group of lactate fermenting bacteria (LAB) that play significant roles in human health as beneficial bacteria as well as pathogens.
