WGS of Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis sheep strains

Johnes disease, caused Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis, is a global issue for livestock. Further this pathogen has been associated with Crohns disease in people. Two major strains, the sheep and cattle strains, are recognised but comparatively little is known about sheep strains. Within the S lineage, two sublineages exist but little is known about their comparative significance in terms of epidemiology and pathogenicity. The present research identifies potential markers for these sublineages that may be exploited in future diagnostic tests or vaccine development. Insights in population structure of sheep strains can assist in categorising new isolates in an international context and improve the reliability of transmission mapping or tracing of new isolates. Together, these findings may improve control of Johnes disease in animals and assist public health efforts.
