Early C4 Plant Expansion in the Himalayan Hinterland Linked to Local Climatic Conditions

This dataset contains biomarker and stable isotope data, temperature reconstructions, and literature compilations used to investigate late Miocene vegetation and climate in the Dati Basin, northern Himalayan hinterland (~8.6–6.6 Ma). It includes five supplementary tables: Table S1 summarizes published carbon isotope records and evidence for late Miocene positive δ¹³C shifts across the Himalayan region and adjacent marine archives. Table S2 presents n-alkane distributions and compound-specific carbon and hydrogen isotope ratios from the Dati Basin. Table S3 presents brGDGT distributions and temperature reconstructions obtained using different calibrations for the Dati Basin. Table S4 compiles published compound-specific carbon and hydrogen isotope records of n-alkanes from Himalayan foreland and hinterland basins. Table S5 compiles published brGDGT distributions in modern soils and lake sediments used for comparison with the Dati Basin samples and assessment of brGDGT sources.
